Do You Need an AI Chatbot on Your Website?

You’ve seen them everywhere. AI chatbots are getting more and more popular, and they’re popping up in lots of websites. Even on our website (amz.com.my), I’ve integrated an AI chatbot using OpenAI’s API. With tools like ChatGPT making AI more accessible, every business feels the pressure to add this shiny new feature to their website. However, an important question that needs to be asked: is an AI chatbot right for your business? Or is it just a trendy distraction? As a web developer, I can honestly say the answer depends on you, your needs and requirements. One thing for sure, not every website needs an AI chatbot. But if you do, and you implement it well, it can become a great addition to your website. Let’s take a more detailed look on how an AI chatbot may or may not be good for you.

What an AI Chatbot Can Actually Do For You

An AI chatbot can be more than just a simple automated responder. When implemented correctly, it can:

  • Provide 24/7 Instant Support: Answer common questions about business hours, pricing, services, or location, even when your team is asleep.
  • Qualify Leads & Generate Leads: Ask visitors questions to understand their needs and automatically capture their contact information for your sales team to follow up.
  • Reduce Support Burden: Handle repetitive or common questions, freeing up your human staff to deal with more complex and high-value issues.
  • Guide Users & Improve UX: Help visitors navigate your site and find exactly what they’re looking for, reducing bounce rates.

When a Chatbot Might Be a Wrong Turn

While an AI chatbot sounds very useful, the negative aspects need to be taken into consideration. A poorly executed AI chatbot can hurt more than it helps. The negative aspects of an AI chatbot:

  • The "Frustration Factor": If an AI chatbot can’t understand basic questions or gives generic, unhelpful answers, it frustrates users and makes your business look out of touch.
  • Implementation & Cost: While some basic bots are cheap, a truly custom, trained AI integration requires an investment of time and money.
  • It Can’t Replace Humans: For complex emotional issues, detailed sales conversations, or serious complaints, a bot is a poor substitute for a real person. The handoff from bot to human must be seamless to ensure a good user experience.

Do You Need One?

So, to determine whether you need an AI chatbot on your website, ask yourself these 3 questions.

1. What specific problem are you trying to solve?

If you want to generate more leads, and doesn’t quite have the resources to assign staff members, then an AI chatbot can really help. An AI chatbot can also help when you want to stop answering the same 10, 20 questions every day. You can feed an AI chatbot with the information it needs, and it can help to answer frequently asked questions, freeing you and your team up to do more important work. However, if you feel you need to have an AI chatbot just to look cool or be trendy, then those are not good reasons – and chances are you’ll probably have a sub-par implementation of an AI chatbot which would portray a negative image of your organization.

2. Do you have the content to train it?

An AI chatbot is only as good as the information you feed it. It needs access to your FAQs, knowledge base, product details, and policy documents to give accurate answers. If this material doesn't exist yet, your first step is to create them. If you don’t feed the required information, there is a high chance the AI chatbot will ‘hallucinate’ – this is a term used in AI to mean it “perceives patterns or objects that are nonexistent or imperceptible to human observers, creating outputs that are nonsensical or altogether inaccurate” [Ref: IBM].

3. What’s your budget and technical capacity?

A simple rule-based chatbot is affordable and easy to set up. However, a custom AI trained on your data that integrates with your CRM or any information systems is a significant project that requires professional development and very significant costs.

The Alternative: Maybe You Just Need a Better Website.

Often, the desire for a chatbot stems from a deeper problem: your website isn't clear enough. When setting up the AI chatbot for our website (amz.com.my), I didn’t really find much that the AI chatbot could do. Most of the questions people ask (or might want to ask), are either already available on the website or are better to be answered by a human being (because of the complexities of customizations). The main reason I keep the AI chatbot on our website is to showcase our ability to implement it.

However, if you already have a good website with enough information on it, and want to invest in an AI chatbot to improve user experience – then go for it!

The Verdict

You might need an AI chatbot if you have a high volume of repetitive customer queries, you operate in e-commerce or B2B with a long sales cycle and need to qualify leads 24/7, and you have the resources (which includes time) to implement and maintain a quality solution.

You probably won’t need an AI chatbot just yet if the real issue is that your website is not developed well, or if your customer interactions are complex and require a human touch – usually happens with service-based businesses. Also, if it’s not in the budget to implement an AI chatbot properly, hold it off.
