What Kind of Laptop Should I Use to Learn Coding?
One of the most common questions I get from parents (and students) of my coding class is: “what kind of laptop should I get for learning coding?” The good news is — you don’t need anything fancy or expensive to start coding.
Here’s what actually matters:
1. Any Modern Laptop Will Do
If your laptop can run Google Chrome smoothly, it’s good enough for coding. You don’t need a gaming laptop or high-end specs. Coding – especially for beginners – will mostly involve typing, running web browsers, and using lightweight tools like VS Code.
Minimum suggested specs:
- Processor: Intel i5 / Ryzen 5 (or better)
- RAM: 8GB (more is always nice, but not a must)
- Storage: SSD, at least 256GB
- OS: Linux, macOS, or Windows — all fine for beginners
If you’re looking to buy used laptops, go for business-grade laptops — like Dell Latitude, Lenovo ThinkPad, MacBook Pro/Air, etc. — these laptops typically are built to last longer.
2. Focus on Comfort and Battery
A comfortable keyboard and a good screen make a big difference — coding means lots of typing and reading. Long battery life helps too, especially if you’re coding during class or on the go.
3. Chromebooks and Tablets?
Chromebooks can work for web-based coding platforms (light coding), but they have limitations when installing software. Tablets are great for learning concepts, but not ideal for serious coding practice. For the purpose of coding classes by AMZ IT Solutions, the use of chromebooks and tablets are not recommended at all.
In short: Don’t overthink it. You don’t need a powerful machine to learn coding — just a reliable one. Focus on comfort, stability, and having a laptop that your child enjoys using. The real power comes from what they learn to do with it.
